The Rangers have struggled to develop prospects in recent years, and now their controlling nature over young players has been exposed.

The New York Rangers were once one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference, but with the front office making some very questionable decisions, this is a team that's taken a major step back in the past few seasons.
One of the reasons for these struggles to remain a top contender is their lack of development from prospects, with the organization getting very little from their draft picks in the last five years.
While Alexis Lafreniere has been a solid player, Kaapo Kakko, Filip Chytil, Braden Schneider and many, many others have failed to click at the top level, and now an issue within the organization has been exposed.

Rangers called out for being controlling over their prospects

Recently, Artemi Panarin was traded in a blockbuster move, and with the team acquiring Liam Greentree from the LA Kings, many fans wanted to know about the former first-round draft pick.
However, according to Ken Campbell of The Hockey News, the organization forbid him to talk to THN reporter, something that no other organization in the entire National Hockey League would do.
Then, in the replies, one fan brought up a story involving Lafreniere when he was a prospect, with GM Chris Drury reportedly demanding the two talk in English, rather than French as he wanted to know everything the players were saying about them and the organization.
Ultimately, this isn't the reason New York are in the spot they are in, but given the level of access that most teams give to their players so reporters can tell their stories and get fans invested, it's easy to see why they have become such a mess overall with their handling of prospects.
