The New York Rangers have lost goaltender Igor Shesterkin during tonight's game at home at Madison Square Garden, and they have announced he will not be returning.
As if the New York Rangers didn't already have enough problems playing on home ice, they just lost one of the most important members of their team.
Goaltender Igor Shesterkin, who is the highest paid goalie in the NHL, was hurt and departed the game. What's more, the Rangers have already announced that he will not be returning to the game.
He was injured during what looked to be not a serious collision with Utah's JJ Peterka, but he needed help getting off the ice and was seen being unable to put any weight on his leg.
Jonathan Quick, who is playing in his third year with the Rangers, is now in net for New York.
So far this year, Shesterkin has gone 17-12-4 with a .912 SV%.
New York Rangers Goaltender Igor Shesterkin Made History With His Contract
New York Rangers general manager Chris Drury made sure that Shesterkin wasn't going anywhere last year.
Even though there were rumours that Shesterkin reportedly rejected an initial contract offer that would have made him the highest paid goalie in NHL history, he eventually did sign a contract that made him just that.
Shesterkin's AAV (average annual value) of $11.5 million beat the $10.5 million AAV by former Montreal Canadiens goalie Carey Price, making him the highest paid player in NHL history at his position.
He's under contract with the Rangers, who took him with the 118th overall pick in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, through 2033.
