This summer, Gerard Gallant was named as Head Coach of the Shanghai Dragons in the KHL, but now, he has officially departed the team.
Gerard Gallant was once in charge of a New York Rangers team that were just a matter of games away from the Stanley Cup Finals, but after failing, the team moved on from him in favour of Peter Laviolette.
At the age of 62, many never expected to see him behind the bench as a Head Coach ever again, but this summer, he shocked the hockey world, officially signing on to become the latest Head Coach of the Shanghai Dragons in the KHL.
Gallant parts ways with the Shanghai Dragons
Less than a season into his tenure with the Dragons, the team have taken to social media to announce the departure of Gallant as their Head Coach after they started the season 17-17-9.
According to the team, Gallant consulted with the medical staff about some ongoing issues, and for both sides, it appears as though the 62-year old stepping away to focus on himself and his own health is the best path forward.
Unfortunately, over the past several weeks my health has not allowed me to perform my duties at the level this position demands. Under these circumstances, I felt it was the right decision to step aside. After discussions with management, we mutually agreed to part ways on good terms. I truly believe the team will come through this period stronger.
Ultimately, health comes first, especially for someone the age of Gallant, and now, we will wait to see if he's ever behind the bench as a Head Coach or an assistant in a top flight hockey league again.
