The Montreal Canadiens suffered a big 5-2 loss at the hands of the Ottawa Senators last night, and likely Calder Trophy winner Lane Hutson took the blame.
The Canadiens would have qualified for the playoffs if they had won, but the Senators' victory created additional room between Montreal and the New Jersey Devils, as the Sens are the East's leading wild-card team.
Hutson admitted after the game that he wasn't pleased with his own play in the hard loss.
"It was a little bit tougher tonight. I mean, we knew it wasn't going to be easy, so we definitely didn't do ourselves any favors," Hutson said.
"Not good enough, just simple. Tough start to the game, obviously, but just not good enough," Hutson told reporters.
Hutson has had an amazing rookie season with 64 points (6g, 58a) through 79 contests.
Hutson is considered a frontrunner by many to win the Calder Trophy
With a nearly 23-minute ice time average per night, he has been a consistent force on and off the puck for the club and remains near the top of the Calder Trophy contenders, pacing fellow rookies Macklin Celebrini and Matvei Michkov.
Christian Dvorak and Nick Suzuki registered goals for Montreal. Sam Montembeault had 28 saves in the defeat.
Defenseman Kaiden Guhle, Hutson's blue-line running mate, criticized the Canadiens for being too flashy at times and spoiling their chance. But he was upbeat regarding the situation with the team.
"No, we got another great opportunity tomorrow against another rival, so I think we'll be just fine," Guhle said.
The Canadiens are 39-31-9 for 87 points and are the second wild card team in the East. Hutson's steady two-way play will be crucial with three games left as Montreal attempts to lock up their playoff spot.
