A trade between the Florida Panthers and Calgary Flames has finally been settled multiple years after it was made.

The Panthers and Flames shocked the hockey world two summers ago when superstar forward Matthew Tkachuk was traded to Florida in exchange for MacKenzie Weegar, Jonathan Huberdeau, and a number of draft picks.
The deal was an immediate success for the Panthers, as they would become one of the strongest teams in the NHL, making back-to-back Stanley Cup finals appearances, and winning it all last year.
Tkachuk was a big part of the team's success in the playoffs, scoring 6 goals and 22 points while appearing in all 24 contests for the team.
Now the trade that brought him to the Panthers has officially been finalized.
As part of the trade, the Flames received a conditional first round pick.
The pick is Florida's own first rounder in the 2025 draft, and was conditional on it not being in the top-ten.
In other words, it was a top-ten protected pick. Since the Panthers cannot mathematically finish inside the top-ten for the draft this year, it is now confirmed that the Flames will in fact receive Florida's first round pick this year.
This gives the Flames two first round picks this year, Florida's and New Jersey's.
The team traded away their own first rounder this year in another 2022 deal when they shipped Sean Monahan to the Montreal Canadiens for future considerations.
Of course, that trade may very well come back to haunt the team as their own first round pick will likely be the earliest of the three involved in these deals, making it the most valuable.
That being said, the Flames are already further along in their retool process than many expected, so the organization is probably happy with the way things have turned out so far.
Be sure to tune in this summer to see who the Flames select with their first picks in the 2025 NHL draft.
