Alex Ovechkin Teases About Signing Another Massive 13-Year-Deal With the Capitals
Alex Ovechkin Joked about signing a 13-year extension with the Capitals during a ceremony celebrating his goal record today.
Fans of the Washington Capitals have been treated to quite the special season this year.
This comes just one year after the team was swept in the first round of the playoffs, and probably shouldn't have made it in the first place.
Unfortunately for caps fans though, the team's current era is coming to an end.
Ovechkin, who will turn 40 in September, has just one season left under contract with the team and very well could retire at the end of next season.
After all, he may very well want to return to his home country of Russia, where he could spend the final years of his career playing in the KHL, where everything is just a little bit slower and should be easier on him as he continues to age.
However, he made one comment today that could give Capitals fans hope that the Ovechkin era won't end quite so soon.
During a special ceremony celebrating his 895th career goal at Capital One Arena, he joked that he could sign a 13-year extension with the team.
Of course, thirteen-year contracts are no longer legal in the NHL, and the maximum length deal Ovechkin could theoretically sign would be eight years, but this could be an indication that he is willing to sign another deal.
If he does, it would likely only be for a couple of years at most, perhaps with the most likely option being a single year contract.
Still though, that could be a nice surprise to fans who are expecting him to retire at the end of next season.
We will just have to wait and see what the great eight wants to do in the final years of his hockey career.
