Connor McDavid and the Oilers open camp with a glaring hole in their top six, and insiders say GM Stan Bowman can't afford to wait.

The Edmonton Oilers spent all summer patching up their blue line and goaltending, but their top six is still a giant question mark walking into training camp.
Insider Allan Mitchell flagged the issue directly this week, and it's hard to argue with him.
Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl remain two of the best players alive, but outside of Zach Hyman locking down a spot next to McDavid, nobody really knows who fills out the rest of the top two lines.
Matt Savoie, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Isaac Howard, Vasily Podkolzin and Kasperi Kapanen are all fighting for jobs that used to belong to Jack Roslovic and Adam Henrique before both walked in free agency this summer.

Why the pressure is mounting

New head coach Mike Babcock inherits a roster that reached back to back Stanley Cup Finals before getting bounced in the first round by Anaheim last spring.
That kind of collapse doesn't happen by accident, and a thin second and third line played a part in it.
Bowman freed up cap room by moving out Darnell Nurse's contract, and he still has money to work with if the right winger becomes available on the trade market.
Names like Brock Boeser and Rickard Rakell have already been floated as trade targets, and it wouldn't shock anyone in the industry to see Bowman make a move before puck drop.

What Babcock needs most

The Oilers can't keep asking McDavid and Draisaitl to cover for a shallow group of wingers forever, not with the championship window still wide open.
A proven scorer who can slide in next to either superstar would change the entire complexion of this roster heading into the season.
