Toronto Maple Leafs forward Max Domi will not be on the ice when training camp begins next week, general manager John Chayka confirmed Friday in an interview with The Canadian Press' Joshua Clipperton.

Chayka said the 31-year-old winger remains out indefinitely due to complications from off-season surgery, closing the door on any hope Domi would be ready for the start of the 2026-27 season.
Spoke with John Chayka today. The Maple Leafs GM says Max Domi will not be ready for the start of training camp due to complications from off-season surgery.

What Happened to Max Domi

Toronto announced on May 25 that Domi had undergone a procedure to address an injury that limited him throughout the 2025-26 season, but complications since then have kept a firm return date off the table.
The team has not disclosed the exact nature of the injury or the surgery itself.
Chayka added that Domi intends to speak publicly about the situation himself "at the right time in the near future."
Domi is entering the third year of a four-year, $15 million contract and is coming off a difficult campaign, posting just 36 points on 12 goals and 24 assists across 80 games.

Cap Implications for Toronto

The timing carries added weight for a Leafs roster currently operating above the salary cap after an active offseason.
Placing Domi on long-term injured reserve once the regular season starts would free up cap flexibility, a scenario that has already been floated around the organization.
Chayka, hired in May as part of Toronto's front office shakeup, has a long history with Domi dating back to their time together with the Arizona Coyotes.
As camp opens without one of the team's grittiest forwards, all eyes turn to how the Leafs manage both the roster and the cap in his absence.
