The Edmonton Oilers may have acquired the next Tim Stutzle

The gap between them is not skill - it is games played against men.

The Edmonton Oilers took Gästrin 84th overall in Buffalo, and Elite Prospects had ranked him 75th on its final board.

Stützle went third overall in 2020 after a full professional season with Adler Mannheim, posting 34 points in 41 games and winning DEL Rookie of the Year at 17.

Gästrin's 2025-26 was split across three levels, and his men's exposure amounted to four HockeyAllsvenskan appearances with MoDo. That is Sweden's second division, not the SHL.

He posted 30 points in 19 under-18 games and 25 points in 24 games at under-20.

Stützle arrived at his draft already carrying 41 pro games. Gästrin arrives with four.

Everything else - the wall play, the slot passing, the video habit - is real but unproven at that speed.

Sense and skill were the boxes, per Oilers director of amateur scouting Rick Pracey, who added that Edmonton sees top-nine upside once the 174-pound forward fills out.

MoDo lost its SHL place after 2024-25 and will play a second straight HockeyAllsvenskan season in 2026-27. For an 18-year-old, that is the friendlier ladder.

A tier down, pro minutes are reachable for a teenager rather than theoretical. Gästrin already logged more than 12 minutes in his Allsvenskan debut after an injury pushed him onto the top line.

If he turns four games into thirty this season, the Stützle reference stops being a video habit and starts being a development track.

If he stays a junior star instead, Edmonton simply waits.

His older brother Milton went 27th overall to Washington in 2025 and was later traded to St. Louis, putting the Gästrin brothers in two NHL organizations.
