Sidney Crosby loses his longtime team member to the Maple Leafs

That detail explains more than the Sidney Crosby connection.

Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun reported that the Toronto Maple Leafs have hired Andy O'Brien as their new strength and conditioning coach.

Coverage since has centred on his three decades with Crosby.

The résumé runs deeper than one client. O'Brien spent five seasons as Pittsburgh's director of sports science and performance and had two separate runs with the Florida Panthers, the second overlapping their back-to-back championship years.

More recently, O'Brien has served as director of player health and performance at Quartexx Management, the agency that operates the Junxion Performance centres in Toronto and Montreal.

There he oversaw training methodology, nutrition, rehabilitation and sports psychology for the agency's clients.

That is agency-side work, and it is the part nobody has priced in. NHL clubs control players for roughly seven months, then send them home to trainers they neither employ nor direct.

Those remaining months now carry much of the conditioning load in a modern career. Toronto has been guessing at them like everyone else.

Chayka has leaned on one word since May, and that word is alignment. Hiring the man who built the other side of the calendar is that idea taken to its end.

Hayley Wickenheiser, whom O'Brien trained decades ago, was among the roughly dozen staff Chayka removed in July.

Her portfolio was player development, and this hire suggests Chayka is rebuilding that department around performance infrastructure rather than mentorship.

Every club ships its roster out in April and hopes the summer goes well. Toronto just hired someone who spent years designing those summers for players wearing other logos.
