Possible Oilers trade falls through after Noah Philp is claimed on waivers
Noah Philp has been solid for the Oilers this season, but after being waived on Sunday, Elliotte Friedman believes he could be a part of a trade.
The Edmonton Oilers have been off to a very solid start in 2025/26, and with the team once again having Stanley Cup aspirations, fans are incredibly excited about their chances this season.
One player that they saw solid production from this season was Noah Philp, but on Sunday, the team decided to waive the talented 27-year old that had 2 goals across 15 games this season.
Philp being claimed stops potential trade
On Monday, Philp was officially claimed by the Carolina Hurricanes, and given their need for depth in their bottom-six, it's very likely that he's going to push for a full-time role in the league moving forward.
That's a solid pickup for Carolina, and for Edmonton, it stopped a potential trade, as Elliotte Friedman revealed on the 32 Thoughts podcast that if Philp cleared waivers, it would have led to a potential trade for the team.
I did have people say to me that if he does clear waivers, this story might not be over. I think there are some teams out there who are interested in him, but I heard that some of them might want the option of being able to send him down. - Elliotte Friedman
It's unclear exactly which teams were eyeing a trade, a move that would have given them the option to send him down, something that claiming on waivers doesn't do, but given his size at 6-foot-3 and his ability, it's easy to see why there was major interest in him.
Ultimately though, he's now set to join the 'Canes, and with the team hoping for a deep Stanley Cup Playoffs run this season, he could be a crucial part of their bottom-six moving forward.
