In a very unfortunate turn of events, Leon Draisaitl accidentally tipped the puck into his own net with 0.4 seconds left, to give the Oilers a crushing loss.
In a closely fought Game 3 against the Vegas Golden Knights, the Oilers were just a few seconds away from a 3-3 draw going into overtime. That's when fate turned cruel against them with just 0.4 seconds remaining.
If Draisaitl didn't touch the puck, it would have missed the net and went wide
Draisaitl, through a piece of bad luck, deflected the puck into his own net, a goal that the replay showed would otherwise not have been heading inside the net.
The play itself was surprising, not only because it happened when it did, but because it came from such a talented, big-time player. That being said, Draisaitl didn't shy away from blame.
Post-game, he fielded questions from media members and took a full share of the blame for the error.
"Obviously we didn't sort it out very well to let the puck get into the slot, but I think after that it's just unlucky," said Draisaitl after the game. "It's unfortunate, it goes off my stick. I'm just trying to keep it out of the net obviously and it's just a bad bounce."
Despite the stomach-churning ending, Draisaitl seems to be handling it all with class. That's a good sign for an Oilers club that needs to bounce back and regroup for a crucial Game 4 against the Golden Knights.
