Connor McDavid crashed hard into the net during Friday's Oilers scrimmage, sparking worry before he got up and kept playing.

Connor McDavid gave everyone at Oilers training camp a jolt on Friday morning.
Video from the scrimmage showed the Edmonton captain barreling toward the crease before losing his footing and slamming hard into the twine, the kind of collision that has sent chills through Oilers fans before given his history with knee injuries.
For a few seconds the ice went quiet as players and staff waited to see how their franchise centerman would react.
He got up.
McDavid shook it off, skated back to the bench, and rejoined the action like nothing happened.
According to broadcaster Gene Principe, who posted video of the moment, the Oilers captain was fine and finished out the scrimmage without any further issues.

Why this moment matters so much

Every awkward fall involving McDavid carries extra weight in Edmonton.
He tore multiple ligaments in a 2019 collision with a goalpost that kept him out of the lineup for months, and the memory of that injury still lingers every time he drives hard to the net.
A scrimmage in September carries none of the stakes of a playoff run, but nobody in the building wanted to see a repeat of that scene, even in a low key camp setting.

Oilers depend on a healthy captain

Edmonton is coming off back to back trips to the Stanley Cup Final, and this roster still runs through number 97.
A healthy, full strength McDavid is the difference between the Oilers being contenders and pretenders, so any scare, even a harmless one in a preseason scrimmage, is enough to make an entire fan base hold its breath until he is back on his feet.
Camp continues this week as Edmonton builds toward the regular season opener.
