Why Detroit put Dominik Shine on waivers before the Florida finale

Dominik Shine hit waivers, and Detroit just showed where heart ranks when late-season roster math gets tight.
This is not really about one depth winger. This is Todd McLellan and Steve Yzerman clearing the deck before the finale against Florida, with Grand Rapids still playing for something real.
Shine, 32, was one of the best stories on the roster. The Pinckney native went from AHL captain to Masterton nominee and scored three goals in 18 NHL games after spending years waiting for a shot.
That is the emotional read. The hockey read is colder.
Detroit was eliminated from playoff contention on April 12, so every move now points toward asset sorting, playoff depth in Grand Rapids, and one last look at who fits next fall.
Shine was productive in the American League, posting 21 goals and 37 points in 38 games when Detroit recalled him on February 28. He earned a two-year, two-way extension in January for a reason.
What this says about Detroit is simple. Shine can help a room, forecheck, finish checks, and survive spot duty, but the club still sees him as a 13th forward, not a locked-in bottom-six answer.
Dominik Shine leaves Detroit Red Wings at a crossroads
Fans are right to feel a sting here, because Shine earned every inch of this run.
He also exposed the roster problem. Detroit still lacks enough cheap, everyday forwards who can kill plays on the walls, stay out of the box, and hold possession when the pace rises.
Waiving Shine is not a rejection of the player. It is a quiet admission that the Red Wings still need better bottom-six certainty before next season starts.
The next checkpoint is obvious. If Grand Rapids gets a sharp, driven Shine for the playoffs, this move may look smart fast.
