Veteran NHL broadcaster Christine Simpson announced she has been diagnosed with breast cancer, saying doctors caught it early and remain optimistic.
Christine Simpson, one of the most respected voices in NHL broadcasting, shared deeply personal news with fans and colleagues on Wednesday.
The longtime reporter, who spent over two decades with Sportsnet before joining Amazon Prime Video's Monday Night Hockey coverage in 2025, revealed she has been diagnosed with breast cancer.
Simpson posted the news directly to her fans, explaining that doctors caught the disease early and that she is feeling great heading into treatment.
A trailblazer in hockey media
Simpson has spent nearly three decades around the sport, starting as the first in-arena host for the Toronto Maple Leafs before becoming a fixture on NHL broadcasts across North America.
Her connection to the game runs deep, as her brother, Craig Simpson, won two Stanley Cups with the Edmonton Oilers and remains a longtime NHL broadcaster in his own right.
She was part of the first all-female broadcast crew in NHL history back in 2020, a moment she has called one of the proudest of her career.
Her resilience through a difficult industry, including a surprising departure from Sportsnet in 2024, has already shown fans and peers what she is capable of overcoming.
Support pours in from across the hockey world
Reaction from the hockey community was immediate.
Fellow broadcasters, former colleagues and fans flooded social media with messages of encouragement, with many pointing to her decades of positivity and strength as reasons they believe she will handle this challenge the same way.
Simpson herself struck an optimistic tone, noting that her strength and resilience have carried her through before and will again now.
As she begins this new chapter, the hockey world she has covered for so long is now the one cheering loudest for her.
