Dylan Larkin will miss the start of Red Wings camp after suffering a fresh upper-body injury this week, interim GM Shawn Horcoff confirmed.

Dylan Larkin's tumultuous offseason just got even messier.
The Red Wings center suffered an upper-body injury this week during training, according to interim general manager Shawn Horcoff, and he will not be on the ice when camp officially gets going.
Horcoff, who took over hockey operations after Steve Yzerman shifted into a senior advisor role, delivered the update as Detroit heads into camp without a captain, without a permanent GM, and now without its best player skating alongside everyone else.

What we know about the injury

Details are still thin. Horcoff described it only as an upper-body injury, the same vague label that has followed Larkin through a handful of ailments over the years.
There is no firm timeline yet on when he will be cleared to join his teammates, and the team has not said whether the injury happened during an informal skate or something more structured.
This is hardly the news Detroit needed.
Larkin arrives at camp already carrying a trade request, a stripped captaincy, and a front office in flux.
Tossing an injury into that mix only turns up the volume on what was already the biggest storyline of the Red Wings' summer.

Why this matters for Detroit

Larkin remains the only proven, high end scoring center on this roster.
Every day he spends off the ice is a day the Red Wings cannot evaluate him, cannot showcase him to interested teams, and cannot lock in what opening night actually looks like.
If this injury drags on, it complicates an already complicated path forward for Horcoff and company.
For now, all eyes are on Detroit as camp officially gets underway this week.
