987-game NHL veteran announces his retirement mid-season
Craig Smith has spent 14 seasons in the NHL thus far, but in a shock move, he has now officially announced his retirement from the league.
The National Hockey League is full of intriguing young superstars ready to blossom, but there's also plenty of veterans that know how to play their role that are still playing valuable minutes in the league.
One of those players is Craig Smith, who has appeared in 987 games across his career, one that began when he was drafted with the No. 98 overall selection back in the 2009 NHL Draft by the Nashville Predators.
Craig Smith abruptly announces his retirement
Now, after appearing in 19 games with the Detroit Red Wings this season, the 36-year old has abruptly announced his retirement from the league after a very solid 14 year career, as announced by his agent on social media.
Smith was acquired by the Red Wings at the trade deadline a season ago, and in his 19 games played with them this season, he's been a solid depth piece, tallying just two assists in that time.
Over his 987 games, Smith played for the Nashville Predators, Boston Bruins, Washington Capitals, Dallas Stars and Chicago Blackhawks as well as Detroit, tallying 220 goals and 452 points in that time.
While the Wisconsin native never quite became a star in the NHL, given that he was a fourth-round draft pick, he put together a very solid career across 14 seasons, and now, we look to see what his future holds in hockey as he has plenty of experience to lean on in several potential roles.
