Columbus Blue Jackets Top-Five Pick Cayden Lindstrom Changes Leagues: Will Not be in NHL Next Year

While many fans of the Blue Jackets were hoping to see Cayden Lindstrom with the team next season, he has decided to play for Michigan State instead.
Even though he missed most of his initial draft-eligible season with the Medicine Hat Tigers due to a back injury, Columbus selected him fourth overall, convinced of his potential as a power forward capable of playing center.
Lindstrom has faced months of adversity since that time. He has spent more time working out off the ice at Nationwide Arena than playing during his time in Columbus, and patience is required as he works through the process of his rehabilitation.
Lindstrom ultimately needed surgery for his back issues
The Blue Jackets played it slow, limiting his work in development camp and training camp in the hopes of not requiring surgery, though it ultimately was needed.
While other prospects returned to junior teams, Lindstrom remained in Columbus, rehabbing and observing NHL games from the press box.
He hasn't signed an entry-level deal yet, but continues to acclimate himself to the pro life, observing Blue Jackets players and personnel. While he has declined interviews, his work ethic has not gone unnoticed.
As far as what's next, Lindstrom will be playing college hockey at Michigan State next fall. While many in Ohio had hoped that he would stay close to home and commit to Ohio State, other schools made earlier and more aggressive recruitment pushes.
Michigan State's upstart program appears to be the likely destination for the talented forward as he continues his development.
