Team Canada defenseman may miss Olympics for beautiful reason
Devon Toews is set to play a major role for Team Canada at the Olympics, but reportedly, there's a chance he could miss the tournament.
Team Canada had immense success at the Four Nations Face Off back in February, and one of the key reasons for that is their blue line with Colorado Avalanche superstar Cale Makar leading the way.
One of the reasons for his success is the familiarity with having Devon Toews there alongside him, and unsurprisingly, when Canada's team was announced on Wednesday, both were right there.
Childbirth could keep Toews from the Olympics
While he's clearly excited for the Olympics in Italy, there's a chance that Toews may not take up a spot on Canada's blue line, with reports now emerging that his wife is currently pregnant, with an expected due date of February.
Some may prioritize this potentially once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to represent their country, Toews has continued to make his wife priority No. 1, with the chance that he may now miss the tournament as a result.
According to Avalanche reporter Corey Masisak, Toews is yet to talk to Team Canada management about this situation, but he believes that it shouldn't be an issue if things work out well for his family and for the team.
Ultimately, it's great to see a player prioritize family like this, and while it would be a heartbreaker for Team Canada to lose such a dynamic piece of their blue line, family comes first, with the country hoping that things work out to where Toews will be on that plane to Italy.
