Craig Berube gives crushing update for Chris Tanev
Chris Tanev has only recently returned to the Maple Leafs lineup, and now Craig Berube reveals that the veteran is set for a lengthy absence.
Over the length of his career spent with Vancouver, Calgary, Dallas and now Toronto, Chris Tanev has been an absolute warrior, becoming one of the best shut-down defenseman in the entire National Hockey League.
Unfortunately though, as the years go by and the hits & blocks start to pile up, so do the injuries, and in 2025/26, things have been at an all-time worst for the 36-year old blue liner.
Chris Tanev set to miss extended time
After just returning from a collision that kept him out for seven weeks, Head Coach Craig Berube has now revealed a brutal assessment on Tanev's future, revealing that he will be 'out for some time'.
Chris Tanev is going to miss some time, significant time. Groin. They're looking at things going forward here, so I'm not going to speculate on what they're going to exactly do, but he's going to be out a while. - Craig Berube
According to Berube, it's a groin issue that's going to keep Tanev out, and with four months left in the season, there's a distinct possibility that we may not see him again during the 2025/26 campaign, although Berube gave no specifics on the potential timeline to return.
With several years remaining on his contract in Toronto, the Maple Leafs will have a major decision to make on Tanev if he is out for a few months, but with the team hoping to make a significant push towards the Stanley Cup Playoffs, it's safe to say that they'll want to get him back at some point in 2025/26.
