Brock Nelson is expected to have a big year in Colorado, but in just their third game of the year, he's suffered a brutal hand injury on Bowen Byram's skate.

The Colorado Avalanche have unsurprisingly begun their 2025/26 campaign in red-hot fashion, and with one of the best top-six groups in the National Hockey League, there's optimism that this team can be a genuine Stanley Cup contender.
A key piece of that unit is veteran centre Brock Nelson, who the team extended in the summer after acquiring him at the deadline last season, and with a 3-0-1 start to the year, the team are absolutely rolling.

Nelson Suffers Scary Injury on Monday

On Monday, the team were flexing their muscles on the Buffalo Sabres, with the team eventually beating them 3-1 to take them to 3-0-1 on the season as they look to build momentum early in the year.
It wasn't all good news however, as Nelson suffered a horrific injury while colliding with Bowen Byram on the boards, as he simply got too close to Byram's skate, cutting his hand in the process.
The reaction from Nelson was immediate, and it was clear that something was wrong, with the veteran forward clearly in plenty of agony in what was an unintentional play from Byram.
As of right now, there's been no official update on Nelson's condition from the team, but he did return to the ice following the incident, playing 16 minutes throughout the Avalanche victory, and given that it clearly didn't hit an important part of his body, it appears as though he'll be able to play through it moving forward.
