Photo emerges after hospitalization that proves just how serious Brayden McNabb's injury is

The photo circulating of Brayden McNabb's face after Game 2 stopped hockey fans cold.
His nose appeared visibly displaced after taking an 87 mph Nikolaj Ehlers slap shot during the first period of the Vegas Golden Knights' 4-3 overtime loss to the Carolina Hurricanes.
But the image tells a bigger story than the injury itself.
McNabb led all Golden Knights skaters in playoff penalty-kill ice time at 49 minutes and 34 seconds entering Game 2 of the 2026 Stanley Cup Final.
He was John Tortorella's most trusted weapon when Vegas went shorthanded, the defenseman who absorbed the hardest matchups in the most consequential moments.
He left the game at 10:52 of the first period and never returned. ESPN's Emily Kaplan reported McNabb left Lenovo Center entirely and was transported to a local hospital.
The penalty kill collapsed without him
After McNabb's departure, Carolina scored a power-play goal late in the third period to take a 3-2 lead.
Vegas clawed back to force overtime, but Tomas Hertl took a tripping penalty in extra time.
Seth Jarvis buried the one-timer on that power play to win it. Both deciding goals came on the man advantage, directly targeting the gap McNabb left behind.
Shea Theodore logged 28 minutes and 30 seconds trying to compensate. Noah Hanifin played 24:15. Jeremy Lauzon, only recently back from his own injury, was pressed into 21:08.
The remaining five defensemen absorbed everything they could, but none of them replicate what McNabb does shorthanded.
The photo tells you the series shifted
McNabb averaged over 20 minutes per night through 16 playoff games before the injury. He had three assists in Vegas' Game 1 win.
Mark Stone called him a player who logs heavy minutes and plays the game as hard as anyone.
The series is now tied 1-1 heading to Las Vegas for Game 3 on Saturday. Whether McNabb can return may determine whether the Golden Knights can protect leads they build.
That photo says the answer might not be the one Vegas wants to hear.
