Chicago Blackhawks set to stun fans with announcement on Jonathan Toews

The Marian Hossa precedent says it is closer to a starting gun.

Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson raised the possibility Friday at Patrick Kane's news conference, per Ben Pope of the Chicago Sun-Times.

Davidson said nothing is set in stone, then pointed straight at how the club handled Marian Hossa.

That comparison is the part worth chasing. When Hossa signed his ceremonial one-day deal on April 7, 2022, Chicago announced his jersey retirement the same afternoon.

The No. 81 went to the rafters that November.

Toews formally retired on June 19, 2026, but he did it as a Winnipeg Jet after one final season in his hometown.

That leaves a gap in the record books that a one-day contract exists to close.

Hossa is the most recent name on Chicago's retired-number list, and his banner plan surfaced the moment the ceremonial signing happened.

Signing Toews first solves the records problem before anyone has to answer it.

Kane returned to the Blackhawks on Thursday on a two-year, $16 million contract running through 2027-28.

That creates a window almost nobody is discussing yet.

For two seasons, Chicago can stage a Toews ceremony with Kane dressed for it, rather than flying him in as an alumnus.

The two defining players of the Stanley Cup dynasty have not shared a United Center sheet since Kane was traded in 2023.

A banner night built around both of them is worth far more to the organization than either honor handled separately.

Connor Bedard, rehabbing from offseason shoulder surgery, would watch from the bench Kane now shares.

That is why the timing reads deliberate rather than sentimental.

The ceremonial contract is arriving now because the window to do it properly is only two years wide.
