Hurricanes and Mammoth make late-night trade
Juuso Valimaki is yet to live up to the hype in the National Hockey League, and now, he's officially been acquired by the Carolina Hurricanes.
The Carolina Hurricanes have been off to a fantastic start in 2025/26, but with the team having some major needs, there's been plenty of speculation around this squad during the new season.
While they're expected to make a blockbuster push for a big name or two ahead of the deadline, on Monday night, they made a solid trade that improved their blue line depth.
Hurricanes acquire former first-round pick
Despite being on waivers just days ago, no one landed former No. 16 overall pick Juuso Valimaki, until Monday that is, when the Hurricanes used future considerations to acquire the former Calgary Flames and Utah Mammoth blue liner.
While Valimaki has shown immense potential throughout his NHL career, posting a career high of 39 points back in 2022/23 with the Arizona Coyotes, he has dealt with plenty of injuries as of late, as he is yet to appear in an NHL game this season, playing just 3 with the Tucson Roadrunners in the American Hockey League.
On paper though, the Hurricanes landed him for virtually nothing, and given that they like his versatility and potential as a depth blue liner, this is a move that could pay major dividends down the road for the 'Canes.
Ultimately, it's unclear whether or not the 27-year old will ever be a full-time NHLer moving forward, but given how little Carolina gave up to get him, it's safe to say that they'll be very happy with the deal that they made.
