Per analyst Elliott Friedman, the Calgary Flames could be in the market for a backup goalie to play behind starter Dustin Wolf, who was a Calder Trophy contender last year.
The Calgary Flames appear to have their starting goaltending situation figured out thanks to the emergence of Dustin Wolf, who was a Calder Trophy candidate last year as the NHL's best rookie.
But after the trade of Dan Vladar to the Philadelphia Flyers, it left them without a capable backup behind Wolf.
Per NHL analyst Elliotte Friedman, the Flames are in the market for additional goalie depth and he was frankly surprised that they didn't make a move for one on waivers.
I don't think this story is over in Calgary about what they're going to do at the backup goalie position. I was surprised they didn't pick someone up on waivers the other day, but as someone explained to me, that would give them four goalies on one-way contracts. So it just says to me that they're thinking of what options they may have, and figure out where to go from there. - Elliotte Friedman
There were multiple options for the Flames to consider on waivers in recent days, as the Buffalo Sabres put Alexandar Georgiev on waivers, while the Anaheim Ducks did the same to Ville Husso.
Neither of them can be considered starting material, but they have far more NHL experience than Devin Cooley, who is only 2-3-1 with a 4.98 GAA in his career.
Dustin Wolf Was a Calder Trophy Finalist Last Year
Wolf, who was taken by the Flames with the 214th overall selection in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, had a sparkling 1st full year in the NHL.
He went 29-16-8 and had a 2.64 GAA< a 910 SV%, and also posted 3 shutouts. He was a finalist for the award with Macklin Celebrini of the San Jose Sharks and Lane Hutson of the Montreal Canadiens, who took home the honours.
