The Montreal Canadiens are trying to negotiate a new contract for Calder Trophy-winning defenseman Lane Hutson, but a close family member is complicating things per NHL analyst Chris Johnston.

The Montreal Canadiens would love nothing more than to be able to take care of a new contract for Lane Hutson, the dynamic young defenseman who thrilled Habs fans last year and won the Calder Trophy as the NHL's best rookie.
But as negotiations are ongoing, there is a close family member of Hutson's who is reportedly throwing some complications into the process. Per NHL analyst Chris Johnston, that would be Hutson's father.
But let's face it, it's not a secret that, you know, he's got a dad that's involved in this negotiation.

And he's, you know, I can only imagine his father's looking out what's best for his kid, what he thinks is best for his kid. - Chris Johnston
This naturally could be a worry for Habs fans if Hutson's father is making things more complicated than they need be in getting a new contract agreed upon between his son and the team he plays for.
It looks like there could be major progress in negotiations, as various reports surfaced indicating that Hutson's agent Ryan Barnes was recently seen talking with Canadiens GM Kent Hughes at a recent game.

Lane Hutson Won First Calder Trophy for the Canadiens Since Ken Dryden

Thanks to his spectacular rookie year, Hutson became the 1st Canadiens player since the late Ken Dryden in 1972 to win the Calder Trophy as the NHL's best rookie. He was also the 7th Canadiens player in their history to do so.
Being the 1st Habs player in over 40 years to take home the award was "crazy" thing as Hutson said.
It's a pretty crazy thing. You look at the history of the Canadiens and it's pretty special, for sure. But you know, I've been fortunate to have opportunities with this team and the support I've had has been amazing. It is pretty cool though, for sure. - Lane Hutson

Hutson had 66 points (6G, 60A) in all 82 games, helping the Habs get back to the playoffs for the 1st time since 2021.
