Reports indicate that Buffalo Sabres goaltender Alexandar Georgiev has signed a contract with the KHL despite being currently under contract in Buffalo.
The NHL career of goaltender Alexandar Georgiev, who has played for multiple teams in his career in North America, could be coming to an end.
Reports indicate that Georgiev, who is currently under contract with the Buffalo Sabres, has signed a contract in the KHL, Russia's top league, with HC Spartak Moscow.
This comes after Spartak put goaltender Dmitri Nikolayev on waivers, with Georgiev rumoured to be his potential replacement.
So far this year, Georgiev has appeared in two games with Buffalo's AHL affiliate, the Rochester Americans, and has not impressed with a 3.57 GAA and a .896 SV%.
He hasn't played in any regular season games yet in a Sabres sweater.
Alexandar Georgiev Was Once The Starter For The Colorado Avalanche
Georgiev was never drafted into the NHL and instead signed a three year entry level contract with the New York Rangers in 2017.
He would play with the Rangers for multiple years until he left after his
rights were traded to the Colorado Avalanche in 2022, who had just won the Stanley Cup.
Georgiev was the replacement for Cup-winning goalie
Darcy Kuemper, who chose to leave Colorado and signed with the Washington Capitals.
Despite moderate regular season success with the Avalanche, Georgiev and his teammates were beaten by the Seattle Kraken in the WCQF in 2023, and by the Dallas Stars in the WCQF in 2024.
He would be traded to the San Jose Sharks as part of a deal to acquire
Mackenzie Blackwood, who subsequently signed a five year deal in Colorado.
Georgiev wasn't brought back to San Jose over the summer.
He's gone 151-108-26 with a .903 SV% during his NHL career.
