Team USA goaltender Jeremy Swayman suffered an embarrassing mishap during the first period of today's game against Denmark, allowing a goal from just inside center ice.
Team USA is hoping to move to 2-0 in the Olympics, but they will have to overcome what has been an underwhelming job by goaltender Jeremy Swayman.
USA trailed 2-1 to Denmark after the first period because of a truly embarrassing goal he allowed from just inside center ice from Nicholas B. Jensen.
Jensen simply floated a shot toward Swayman, hoping to perhaps get a rebound, but Swayman simply missed it, and it went in for a 2-1 Denmark lead.
It was also the first time that either the men or women of Team USA trailed entering a new period.
Team USA Started Jeremy Swayman Over Connor Hellebuyck And Jake Oettinger
Swayman was chosen for Team USA along with Winnipeg Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck and Dallas Stars goaltender Jake Oettinger.
Team USA head coach Mike Sullivan, who coaches the New York Rangers, said the decision was made to start Swayman because of their packed schedule.
At the end of the day, we’re playing three games in four nights, and we have three guys that we know are capable of helping us win games. - Mike Sullivan
Defenseman Charlie McAvoy, who is Swayman's teammate with the Boston Bruins, boasted about Swayman's abilities and natural competitive nature.
He’s just a heck of a goaltender. I mean, he competes. I think that’s his biggest skill, just his competitiveness. He’s unreal. - Charlie McAvoy
If Swayman's struggles continue, expect either Hellebuyck or Oettinger to get the bulk of the starts for the rest of the Olympics.
