Team Canada confirms controversial starting goalie choice for first Olympics game
Jordan Binnington is the guy for Canada’s Olympic opener against Czechia despite a season that would make most goalies hide in the basement.
It’s a massive gamble by Jon Cooper.
Binnington is having a nightmare year with only 8 wins and a ghastly .866 save percentage.
But the coaching staff is banking on 'aura', that 2019 Cup ring, and his Four Nations Faceoff heroics.
They think the big stage will fix the leaks in his game.
Across the ice, Lukas Dostal is coming in hot.
Binnington must flip the switch in Milano
Dostal has already piled up 21 wins for the Ducks this season with a much better .897 save percentage.
He isn’t just some backup; he’s been the backbone of a rebuilding team all winter.
Canada has Logan Thompson sitting there with a shiny .912 save percentage, yet they’re going with the guy who has struggled to find his game in St. Louis.
It’s a gutsy move that could blow up in their faces.
If Binnington chokes, the 'weakest link' talk will turn into a full-blown crisis before the first intermission.
And David Pastrnak doesn’t miss if you leave the high-glove side open.
Canada needs a save.
They better get one.
