Connor McDavid comments on taking Team Canada captaincy from Sidney Crosby
Team Canada revealed Connor McDavid as their new captain in Sidney Crosby's absence, but according to him, he's just keeping the spot warm for 87.
The past two games in the 2026 Olympic Games have not been easy for Team Canada, as they squeaked past Czechia in overtime before a last-minute goal from Nathan MacKinnon against Finland propelled them into the Gold Medal Game.
It wasn't without controversy or absences however, as the team played without both Josh Morrissey and Sidney Crosby on Friday, and many believe that to beat the USA for gold, they'll need both healthy.
In Crosby's absence, the team were forced to make a decision and name a new captain, and unsurprisingly, their pick was Connor McDavid, captain of the Edmonton Oilers who was already wearing an 'A' for Canada.

It wasn't a hard shift for McDavid, who has captained the Oilers since he was a teenager, but after their victory over Finland, he revealed how things would go if 87 returned to the lineup and what his thoughts are on being captain.

Given how McDavid and so many other Canadian players have treated Crosby over the years, it's no surprise that he gets the utmost respect, and even if the team won in his absence, the second he returns, so does the 'C' to his chest, as he has earned over an incredible NHL and international career.
As of right now, we don't quite know Crosby's status for the Gold Medal Game, but if he returns for one of the most anticipated hockey games in the history of the spot, he'll no doubt be leading Team Canada once again.
