Finnish legend Teemu Selanne blasts officials after loss to Canada

Coming into Friday's semifinal action at the 2026 Olympics, Finland were seen as the underdog against gold medal favourites Canada, but that didn't mean they weren't going to give everything they had.

With a 2-0 lead in the game however, Finland let their foot off the gas, and after a late Nathan MacKinnon powerplay goal, it's Canada moving on to the gold medal game against either the United States or Slovakia.

Getting that powerplay brought with it some controversy however, as Finnish legend Teemu Selanne took to social media to claim that it's tough to beat Canada and the officials, calling out the penalty given after a high stick to Nathan MacKinnon.

Sure, there were issues coming into the game with both officials being Canadian, but in that moment, it doesn't matter whether it's 90 seconds to go or 90 seconds into the game, it was a clear high stick on Nathan MacKinnon, and it should have been called the way it was.

It's no surprise that Selanne is passionate however, as his home country blew a chance against a Canadian team that struggled to find their offense for most of the game, but with Finland sitting back on their heels for the entire second and third period, this call wasn't all that lost them the game.

Ultimately, none of the officials at this Olympics have been perfect, with seemingly every game having a bad call or two, and while there were some complaints to be had for Finland in this one, the late penalty isn't one of them, with Selanne's post coming off as bitter, rather than based in any objective fact.
