Former NHL Defenseman Jordan Schmaltz is calling out college hockey for going what he feels is too far with players transferring and receiving payments.

College athletics has experienced a surge in players entering the transfer portal and getting paid through NIL (Name, Image, Likeness), which allows them to earn financial compensation for their personal brand.
That isn't sitting well with everyone, particularly former NHL defenseman Jordan Schmaltz.
Schmaltz, who attended and played for the University of North Dakota before mostly playing in the American Hockey League, blasted college athletes for constantly transferring in a lengthy rant on X.
This NCAA portal shit is just stupid in college hockey. I've had enough. Guys leaving programs bc they had 30 points and think they are coveted NHL like free agent stars. Well he got a 90 grand so I want a 100k.

He got this and my agent said I could get that blah blah blah. Fk you. Me me me me. Where's the loyalty. Where's wanting to add to the tradition of the school that showed you love to begin with.

This is basically pro hockey now so let's make these kids sign 1,2,3 or 4 year deals and the only out clauses are signing an actual pro contract or not playing in 50% of the teams games the previous year (not barring injury).

Schmaltz continued in his lengthy statement by calling out the lack of loyalty that some players have shown.
Mutual termination can also be a factor. That way teams and players can both enter in with an expectation of what they are exactly signing up for. You develop some «project» into a player and how does he repay you?

He turns around, leaves that mid major school, goes to the BIG10 and says lick my nuts. What a system. So dumb. I'm fired up right now. Might have to shadow box to cool off.
His statement was mostly met with agreement, with many X users saying that college athletics has gone too far.
Put this in my veins for all of college sports right now

NCAA has ruined college sports. NIL was the last nail.

This is a good take. And this goes for all NCAA sports.

Every word of this is true. I'm happy kids getting something for their time but the combination of this and easy transfer portal is absurd.

Schmaltz played a total of 42 NHL games between 2016 and 2019 for the St. Louis Blues.
