Star Montreal Canadiens rookie emerges in trade talks ahead of the deadline

Oliver Kapanen trade buzz hits the Montreal Canadiens as the NHL trade deadline nears, and a top-six center chase could turn costly.
The chatter comes from the simple math of «big game hunting.» If Kent Hughes wants a real second-line center, he needs real assets going back.
Kapanen is exactly the kind of name other GMs circle because he's already producing in a meaningful role.
He's 22, drafted in 2021 in the second round by the Montreal Canadiens, and he's a right-shot center with runway.
Through 59 games, he has 18-13-31, and he's earned penalty-kill trust too.
Canadiens don't need to make any moves
The context matters, Montreal isn't forced to sell anything. They're sitting in a playoff spot and can choose patience.
But Friday's deadline, March 6, is a hard stop, and «patient» can flip fast if a core-fit center actually hits the market.
That's where Kapanen becomes trade bait in theory, not because Montreal wants him gone, but because his value is clean and easy to sell in a package.
If Hughes targets a center with term who can drive play between skilled wingers, Kapanen is the type of prospect a rival asks for first, not last.
If Montreal stays quiet, Kapanen likely keeps growing into that middle-six spine, and the Canadiens keep their best asset, time. But, with Robert Thomas possible being available, tough decisions will be made.
