Elias Pettersson traded to Nashville Predators for declining veteran in new blockbuster proposal

Two declining veterans keep surfacing in trade talk.
The detail everyone skips: neither can be moved unless he personally signs off.
The Hockey News grouped Vancouver's Elias Pettersson and Nashville's Jonathan Marchessault this week as parallel problems, two fading contracts their front offices would love to shed.
Both are framed as puzzles for a general manager to solve.
That framing quietly misplaces who holds the pen. Pettersson and Marchessault each carry a full no-movement clause, so the deciding vote belongs to the player, not Ryan Johnson or Chris MacFarland.
Rick Dhaliwal noted the Canucks have not even asked Pettersson to waive his. Until that conversation happens, every reported suitor is speculation.
The same lock sits on Marchessault in Nashville. He can hear his name in every roundup and simply stay put.
The leverage was banked at the peak
Each man secured that clause at his moment of maximum value, then declined afterward.
Pettersson signed his eight-year, $92.8 million extension off a 102-point season, and has posted 45 and 51 points since.
Marchessault turned a Conn Smythe run and a Vegas Cup into a Nashville deal at 33, and the production faded almost immediately.
The clause is a fossil of their best week, and it now governs their worst.
Why the rumors stall in place
This is why both sagas move so slowly despite constant chatter.
A GM can find a trade partner, absorb retention, and still be told no by the one person the story treats as cargo.
MacFarland is reshaping Nashville aggressively, and Johnson is mid-rebuild, yet both are boxed in by decisions their predecessors made when these players had all the leverage.
The honest read is not that these contracts are stuck. It is that the players are exactly where they chose to be.
