The Kirby Dach trade market is getting crowded, and two Alberta rivals are now squarely in the picture for the Montreal Canadiens forward.
NHL insider Frank Seravalli told Sportsnet:
We've reported Edmonton's interest in Kirby Dach; Calgary has also kept tabs on Dach.
That is plenty of attention for a 25-year-old who has spent much of his career answering questions about his health.
Dach is 6-foot-4, shoots right and was the third overall pick in 2019, a profile that rarely goes unnoticed around the league.
Why Edmonton Wants Dach
The Oilers have been searching for a right-shot center, and injuries up front have only sharpened that need.
There is also a family connection, since his younger brother Colton already plays in Edmonton.
A reunion would make a great storyline, but Stan Bowman will care far more about the price tag.
Why Calgary Is Watching
The Flames are still hunting for a true number one center, and Dach offers size, youth and upside to pair with Morgan Frost. Calgary has shown it likes betting on former high picks with untapped potential, and Dach fits that mold neatly.
Montreal is not budging easily. The Canadiens reportedly turned away second-round pick offers because they want help for their current roster.
Dach signed a one-year, $3.6 million deal in July and can become an unrestricted free agent next summer, which gives patient suitors a choice between trading now, waiting for the deadline or pursuing him in free agency.
His production gives buyers something to think about. Dach managed 15 points in 37 games last season, so the injury risk is real. Montreal has moved him up to the second line while Ivan Demidov recovers from injury, which gives teams a chance to see him in a bigger role.
For now, this remains a waiting game. Edmonton appears ready to be patient, Calgary is monitoring the situation, and Montreal wants real value back. If Dach produces in his new role, the asking price may only climb. Watch this one closely.
