Kirby Dach is reportedly the Oilers' top trade target, and Kent Hughes was busy on the phone. Here is what the latest chatter says about a deal.
Kirby Dach is back in the Oilers rumor mill, and this time the chatter comes with real urgency.
Edmonton has been linked to the Montreal Canadiens forward for weeks, and fresh overnight talk suggests a deal could be close.
It started with Kent Hughes. One fan account on X noticed the Canadiens general manager was very active this morning, and said he made a phone call to Edmonton.
Nothing has been confirmed about what was discussed, but the timing caught the attention of Habs and Oilers fans alike.
What the late night chatter says
A second X post filled in more of the picture.
It says Dach is, and has been, the main target for the Oilers for weeks.
It also says Edmonton has talked to Boston about Matthew Poitras as a secondary option, and that something is believed to happen before Wednesday.
That lines up with earlier reporting.
Frank Seravalli wrote late last month that the Oilers are intent on landing Dach, and that the Calgary Flames are interested too.
He also noted the Canadiens were holding firm on a high asking price that reportedly includes an NHL roster player.
The Bruins wrinkle
Boston reportedly wants a right-shot defenseman, but the offer on the table is a left-shot one, either Ty Emberson or Spencer Stastney.
That mismatch could be the biggest hurdle if Poitras is the piece Edmonton lands.
Montreal has its own reasons to listen.
Dach is on a one-year, $3.6 million contract and can become an unrestricted free agent in 2027.
Neither post comes from a confirmed insider, so this one stays in rumor territory for now.
If a deal really is coming by Wednesday, we should find out very soon.
