Tyson Barrie Leaks Details of Blockbuster Failed Trade That Nearly Went Down With One Specific Canadian Team
Former NHL defenseman Tyson Barrie, who retired over the summer, talks about a near trade that would have sent him to the Vancouver Canucks in 2019.
Former NHL defenseman Tyson Barrie decided to retire this summer after playing for 5 teams during his career.
He recently told a story in which, while playing for the Colorado Avalanche, he received a call from his agent while watching a New York Yankees MLB game about how he was nearly traded to the Vancouver Canucks.
So I was just watching the Yankees game, thinking I was getting traded to the Canucks, which I was like, you know, obviously I love Colorado, but I kind of knew I was going to get traded. So to be able to go home to Vancouver, in a way, would have been really cool, but obviously didn't materialize. So I talked to Sakic after, and he said it wasn't actually that close, so it kind of shows you the business you're in a little bit.
Barrie was traded, but not to the Canucks. He was sent to the Toronto Maple Leafs with Alexander Kerfoot and a 6th round pick in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft for Nazem Kadri, Calle Rosen and a 3rd round draft pick in 2020.
Tyson Barrie retired over the summer
Barrie was taken with the 64th pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft by the Avalanche while playing for the Kelowna Rockets of the WHL, and he would play the first several years of his NHL career with the team before the aforementioned trade to the Maple Leafs.
It was one of the more notable trades in Maple Leafs history, sending away fan favourite Kadri to a new location where he'd eventually win the Stanley Cup; meanwhile, the Leafs are still waiting for their 1st title since 1967.
Barrie also played for the Nashville Predators, Edmonton Oilers, and Calgary Flames during his career.
He played in 882 games and had 508 points (110G, 398A).
