Today, Sidney Crosby spoke to the media and gave his thoughts on Alex Ovechkin’s rumored retirement from the NHL.

Throughout the week, reports have intensified that Alex Ovechkin is seriously considering retirement from the NHL at the conclusion of the 2025-26 season.
Heading into this year, many believed it could be Ovechkin’s last year as his contract expires especially after he broke the NHL’s all-time goal record there is not much left for him to prove.
In recent days, Ovechkin stoked the fire of retirement rumors with his actions before the Capitals’ game in Toronto.
Now, Alex Ovechkin’s biggest rival Sidney Crosby has spoken about the retirement rumors and even their legacy in the history of the league as a whole.

Sidney Crosby discusses Alex Ovechkin retirement rumors

During a recent interview with Josh Yohe of The Athletic, Crosby was asked about his relationship with Ovechkin.
He began by admitting he has great respect for Ovi and knows their time in the NHL together is coming to an end.
It's been on my mind quite a bit. I've been thinking about him a lot. He's accomplished so much and has had an amazing career. And I know that he still has an incredible passion for that game.

Crosby continued and acknowledged how lucky he has been to be in such a great rivalry with Ovechkin over the years in the same division.
I feel very fortunate that I've gotten to be in the same division against the greatest goal scorer of all time. It's been an honor.

Finally, Crosby spoke about how strange it will be if this is it for Ovechkin not seeing him on the opposing bench when the Penguins play the Capitals in the future.
Yeah, it would be so weird if he’s not around anymore. It would be weird, especially because we’ve (almost) always been in the same division. We see each other so often. We came into the league together. So, really, it’s all we’ve ever known. There have been changes. You play with a lot of different guys over the course of 20 years. But for me, seeing him a few times a year, and seeing him in the playoffs, has always been a constant.

While Ovechkin has not confirmed his retirement, it seems to be the most obvious secret in the NHL at this point that his career is coming to an end.
Crosby and Ovechkin will be able to face off twice in the last week of the season including what could be Ovechkin’s last NHL game in Washington on April 12th.
As these games take place, it will be interesting to see if Crosby and Ovechkin share any special moments on the ice to cap off their time together in the NHL.
