Sidney Brill, a 21-year-old defenceman set to join the University of Oregon this fall, has died, the hockey community confirmed.

Brill's death was confirmed on July 22, 2026. His junior teams and the Oregon hockey program shared their condolences in the days that followed.
Oregon Hockey posted a tribute to Brill, calling the loss heartbreaking and extending sympathy to his family, friends and teammates.
Messages of support spread across the junior hockey world as word of his passing reached those who had crossed paths with him.
Brill was from Henderson, Nevada, and built his junior career in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League.

A career built in the KIJHL

He began with the Princeton Posse during the 2023-24 season, appearing in 21 games and recording six points before a trade sent him to the Creston Valley Thunder Cats.
Across 115 regular-season KIJHL games, Brill scored 11 goals and added 28 assists for 39 points. He also skated in 11 league playoff games, all with Creston Valley, adding three points.
This past season was the strongest of his career offensively, with five goals and 15 points in 42 games for the Thunder Cats.

The Oregon chapter that never came

In April, Brill committed to the University of Oregon Ducks of the American Collegiate Hockey Association, the next step in a journey that had carried him from Nevada to British Columbia.
He was preparing to join the program this fall when news of his passing reached the hockey community.
The Ducks, his former KIJHL clubs, and those who played alongside him are now left to remember a young defenceman whose career was still ahead of him.
Details surrounding his death have not been shared publicly, and his family has asked for support during a difficult time.
For his teams and teammates, the focus now turns to honouring a life cut short.
