Patrik Laine is putting in work on the ice in South Florida, and the timing has NHL insiders buzzing about where he might land for the 2026-27 season.
The 28 year old winger has been a free agent all summer after his brief and injury plagued run with the Montreal Canadiens fell apart last season.
Laine appeared in just five games with Montreal before undergoing surgery for a core muscle injury, and once he was medically cleared, the Habs never called his number again.
It was a quiet, frustrating end to a chapter that started with so much promise.
Now the sniper is grinding through workouts in South Florida, and that alone has fueled speculation linking him to both the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Florida Panthers.
Analysts have pointed out that Jon Coopers system in Tampa could be an ideal fit for a player who thrives as a power play specialist, while Floridas need to fill a gap left by Brad Marchand adds another layer to the rumor mill.
Toronto and Dallas still in the mix
Just last week, both the Toronto Maple Leafs and Dallas Stars were floated as potential suitors, and neither team has been ruled out.
Add in reported interest from Minnesota, the New York Rangers and the New York Islanders, and its clear Laine still has options even without a contract in hand.
A prove it deal feels likely
Given his injury history, most expect Laine to sign a short term, incentive laden contract wherever he ends up.
For a player with his shot and offensive upside, even a one year prove it deal could be enough to reignite his career if he lands in the right situation.
Wherever he signs, fans wont have to wait much longer to find out.
