One Acquitted Player From Team Canada's 2018 WJC Team Not Expected to Return to NHL, Per Insider
While many members of the Team Canada 2018 WJC scandal have been looking forward to their returns to the NHL, one will reportedly not be resuming his NHL career.
This news comes after it was announced that the NHL had implemented
a return to play plan for the five members of the 2018 Canadian WJC team involved in the scandal.
Formenton's NHL Career May Be Over
It was reported earlier today by insider Chris Johnston that
Alex Formenton, one of the five members of the 2018 Canadian WJC team, is unlikely to resume his professional hockey career in the NHL.
Chris Johnston: Re Alex Formenton: I'm not necessarily expecting to see this player back in the NHL anywhere this season - Chris Johnston
This news comes during a time where many are speculating as to the potential landing spots for the five players involved in the scandal.
Formenton, who spent his entire NHL career with the Ottawa Senators, recently
a short-term contract in Switzerland with top Swiss club HC Ambri-Piotta.
The forward spent two seasons with the club following the initial investigation into the scandal, but spent the past 18 months away from professional hockey entirely.
Door Not Completely Closed For Formenton
While his chances don't look great, the NHL is not completely out of the question for Formenton. His contract in Switzerland only runs through December of this year, meaning when the NHL officially allows the five players to return on December 1st, Formenton could theoretically make his comeback, although it remains unlikely at this point.
Perhaps a standout performance in the Swiss league will change the minds of NHL executives.
