NHL Analyst Makes Controversial Comments on Canadian Teams
NHL analyst and former Stanley Cup winner Mike Rupp has sparked controversy by saying it could be another quarter-century before a Canadian team wins the Stanley Cup again.
It's hard to believe, but the last Canadian-based NHL team to raise the Stanley Cup was the Montreal Canadiens in 1993.
And per NHL analyst Mike Rupp, who won the Stanley Cup with the New Jersey Devils 10 years after that in 2003, Canada could be waiting a long time for their next Cup champion.
Rupp recently said he thinks it could be over another quarter-century before a Canadian-based team is the last one standing.
There is potential that another 25 years could pass, which would bring the grand total to 57 years, that Canada hasn't won a Stanley Cup.
Is Canada going to have to wait that long for another team north of the border to hoist the Stanley Cup?
No Canadian NHL Team Has Won the Stanley Cup Since 1993
Multiple Canadian-based NHL teams have had the chance to win the Stanley Cup since the 1993 Montreal Canadiens, but all have fallen short.
The Edmonton Oilers have had 3 chances in the Stanley Cup Final, including in each of the last 2 seasons; in 2006, they were defeated in 7 games by the Carolina Hurricanes, followed by consecutive
heartbreaking losses to the Florida Panthers.
The Vancouver Canucks were defeated in Game 7 of the SCF in 1994 and 2011 by the New York Rangers and Boston Bruins, while the Ottawa Senators were taken down in 5 games by the Chicago Blackhawks in 2013.
The Canadiens made a surprise run to the 2021 SCF in the Covid-19 shortened season, but were defeated in 5 games by the Tampa Bay Lightning.
