Former fan-favorite NHL player receiving interest for a new role

The reason he is still waiting has almost nothing to do with Cogliano.

Chris MacFarland left for the Nashville Predators on June 2, and Joe Sakic reclaimed the general manager title for what Kroenke Sports called the foreseeable future.

Elliotte Friedman has now floated Cogliano's name twice in six weeks on 32 Thoughts, the most recent mention landing July 6.

Two mentions and still no formal search is the tell here. Colorado is not hesitating because it lacks candidates.

Sakic ran the draft and July 1 free agency himself, and the calendar has gone quiet since.

Jared Bednar enters 2026-27 on the last year of his contract, something Sakic acknowledged at his June season-ending press conference.

Bednar is the winningest coach in franchise history, hired by Sakic in 2016 and publicly backed again after a 121-point Presidents' Trophy season ended in a Vegas Golden Knights sweep.

Whoever holds the general manager chair inherits that decision. Handing a first-time executive the power to extend or fire a Stanley Cup-winning coach in his opening month is not how contenders operate.

Sakic keeping the title through next season keeps the Bednar verdict with the man who made the original hire.

Cogliano came to Colorado on March 21, 2022, from the San Jose Sharks for a 2024 fifth-round pick.

He won the Stanley Cup that June, retired in 2024 after 1,294 regular-season games, and moved into the front office as special assistant to the general manager.

A deadline rental bought with a fifth could eventually produce an NHL general manager, a return no team budgets for.

The timing is the actual story.

Cogliano's window most likely opens the same summer Bednar's contract question finally closes.
