Elliotte Friedman revealed the Carolina Hurricanes' bold plan for Mikko Rantanen ahead of the trade deadline and free agency.
Just over a month after getting traded from the Colorado Avalanche to the Caroline Hurricanes, there's a lot of uncertainty surrounding Rantanen's future with the Hurricanes.
Many believe he could be traded once again, after reportedly refusing to sign a contract extension offer from the Canes earlier this month.
Also, the Canes will do all they can to avoid repeating what happened with
Jake Guentzel last season, where they had to trade him hours before free agency to not lose him for nothing after acquiring him from the Pittsburgh Penguins at the trade deadline.
The insider Elliotte Friedman believes the Canes won't take a different road with Rantanen, in the sense that they'd rather do the bold thing and keep him for a shot at winning the Stanley Cup.
Of course, the Canes would prefer to sign him before the deadline. But Friedman suggested the team would likely keep him instead of trading him before the playoffs.
"Remember: if Rantanen is on the Carolina roster post-deadline, they are the only team that can sign him to an eight-year deal. If I had a good team, I'd always go for the Cup and let free agency fall where it may. That could be the Hurricanes' path if there's no certainty by next Friday. The Stanley Cup is forever. I like bold, and that's bold."
Meanwhile, Rantanen had a great perfromance last night against the Buffalo Sabres. In a 5-2 win, he scored a goal and an assist.
After nine games, Rantanen now has five points, including two goals.
