Arizona State University sends a message to Matthew Mayich as he fights for his life

Arizona State University's hockey program is publicly rallying around defenseman Matthew Mayich as he continues to fight for his life following a devastating collapse during a team workout last month.
The Sun Devils shared a graphic on social media dedicated to Mayich, featuring his headshot alongside a message of support from his teammates and the broader ASU community.
The tribute read:
Matthew, your ASU teammates and the entire Sun Devil community are keeping you and your family in our thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.
What happened to Mayich?
Mayich, 21, collapsed on Aug. 20 during an outdoor workout in Tempe on the first day of coach led activities.
He had only arrived on campus days earlier after transferring from Clarkson University. His attorney, Robert Carey, said the sophomore suffered exertional heat stroke that cut oxygen flow to his brain, and has since described his condition as having "zero chance of recovery."
Mayich remains hospitalized at Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix.
A St. Louis Blues sixth round pick in 2023, Mayich spent four seasons with the Ottawa 67's before his lone year at Clarkson. He was expected to anchor ASU's blue line this season.
Support pours in from the hockey world
ASU confirmed coaches and training staff were present during the workout, along with a third party previously used by the program, and said it is reviewing the circumstances.
Carey has called for an independent investigation, saying Mayich's family remains skeptical of the school's account. Meanwhile, tributes have poured in from Clarkson, the Blues organization and fans across the hockey community as Mayich's family keeps vigil at his side.
