Recently though, he's been getting on fans nerves with his controversial calls. Today he was reffing game 4 between the New York Islanders and Carolina Hurricanes, in what finished as a 5-2 win for the Hurricanes to give them a 3-1 series lead.
During the 1st period, Brent Burns cross checked Mathew Barzal, sending him head first into the boards:

For some reason, McCauley thought this play was embellished from Barzal as he was pushed from behind into the boards. So instead of the Islanders gaining another advantage, the penalties were called even and fans were livid:
