There are currently 7 AHL teams shutdown due to COVID outbreaks and we've also seen a spike in NHL players being added to COVID lists. Because of that, Jeff Marek of Sportsnet brought up the idea of the return of the Taxi Squad.
Earlier this week the Boston Bruins were unable to recall anyone from the Providence Bruins because of a COVID shutdown. If the Bruins had a Taxi Squad they'd have been able to simple use a member of their own team.
"With all the talk about (emergency goalies) and the inability to call up players from the American Hockey League, I know we don't want to discuss it but we may have the conversation about taxi squads again."
With the Olympics on the horizon and the NHLPA looking to attend it might be a benefit to suggest the return of the Taxi Squad. This would allow teams to compete on an even playing field and allow the league to avoid postponing as many games as possible while still allowing teams to ice competitive players.
