The NHL built this year's schedule with a 3 week long Olympic buffer, but COVID had different ideas. Now that time is going to be used to fill in for missed games due to the NHL shut down. It's clear every team will receive a bye/rest week of sorts, but how much rest is yet to be indicted.
The schedule change doesn't sound like it'll be the only changes according to Larry Brooks of the New York Post:
"With decision having been made on Olympics, we are told that NHL/NHLPA are embarking on discussions relating to COVID-related roster issues including possible taxi squads, cap exemptions, et al when schedule resumes on Monday.
Also told that plan is for each team to have a "bye period" for an undetermined number of days during the original Olympic break as part of the revised schedule."
It seemed inevitable that the return of taxi squads would come into play if they league was going to play a full 82 game schedule. It will be interesting to see what other changes the NHL puts in place
