Many predicted that the Boston Bruins would struggle tremendously this season, particularly in the wake of the retirements of the team's top two centers, David Krejci and Patrice Bergeron, during the off-season. The Bruins are leading both the Atlantic Division and the Eastern Conference, despite not being the team to watch in the league since they are now ranked third overall.
Insider drops huge nugget of information about Bergeron
Co-host Ryan Whitney, of the "Spittin' Chicklets" podcast claims that Bergeron is likely planning to make a comeback this season and sign with the Bruins:
Whitney claims that Bergeron has been seen skating around Boston on numerous occasions. Though he believes Bergeron is skating to return, he did mention that he was informed that Bergeron enjoys skating and stays in shape for alumni games.
According to Whitney, Bergeron is probably catching up so he can sign with the Bruins in late February, where he intends to rejoin the team for a potential postseason run. This may have merit because Bergeron is probably upset with the Bruins' disappointing playoff run, especially in light of their typically strong regular season play.
Boston's season so far and the cap space available
Even though the top three centers for the Bruins are now
Charlie Coyle,
Pavel Zacha, and
Morgan Geekie, adding a player of Bergeron's caliber would undoubtedly increase their strength this season. Bergeron's performance and presence would be a huge asset because he is one of the best two-way centres in hockey history, if not the greatest.
If Bergeron were to sign with Boston, he would have to accept a contract worth less than $2 million, or the Bruins would need to move a player to create space, as Boston has slightly over $2 million in cap space. Another alternative is to sign Bergeron to a contract like the one from the previous season, a lower salary, and a bonus that carries over to the cap next year.
