The Edmonton Oilers looked like they could possibly go all the way last season. McDavid and Draisaitl both scored over 110 points in the regular season and dominated in the playoffs.

They won a hard-fought series against the LA Kings in the first round, then after losing game one in a football score fashion against the Calgary Flames in round 2, they went on the win 4 straight.
With Ben Stelter in the Oilers corner, it looked like they were going to go all the way, that is until they ran into the eventual cup champion Colorado Avalanche. The Avalanche proved how poor the Edmonton Oilers defence and goaltending was and demolished the Oilers in 4 straight games.
Ryan Rishaug of Sports Center had a discussion with McDavid about the upcoming season, and McDavid said the team will have no problem scoring goals, it will be the other areas that need help.
«I asked [Connor McDavid] about all of the offense weaponry he has all around him, and immediately he said, ‘we're not going to have a problem scoring goals, it's going to be about defence.'»

The Oilers made a significant upgrade in between the pipes this season, bringing in Jack Campbell to replace Mike Smith as the starting goalie, but they will be going in with the same defence pairings as they had last season. The only change on the back end is they brought in former second overall pick Ryan Murray.
